Avoiding Wire Fraud
Wire fraud is the single biggest financial risk in a real estate transaction. A minute of verification protects your entire down payment.
How closing funds get stolen
Criminals monitor email around a pending closing, then send fake wiring instructions that look like they came from your title company, agent, or lender. The money moves in minutes and is rarely recovered.
Red flags to watch for
Last-minute changes to wiring instructions or account numbers
Emails with urgency or secrecy about a transfer
Slightly misspelled email addresses or domains
A request to wire funds to a different bank than notified by us
Verify before you send
Before wiring any funds, call our office using a phone number you already have — never a number from an email — and confirm the instructions verbally. We will never send or change wiring instructions by email.
If you think you’ve been targeted
Act immediately. Contact your bank to request a wire recall, call us, and report it to the FBI’s IC3 at ic3.gov. Speed is everything in the first 24 hours.
